MMORPGs on consoles seem to be making their way, step by step. ArcheAge Chronicles is following the new wave, like New World and Throne and Liberty. Sony’s State of Play was an opportunity to finally see the game in action after its name change.
Archeage Chronicles: MMORPG or Online Action RPG?
Although the game from XLGAMES and Kakao Games is officially presented as an online Action-RPG, it actually gives the impression of being a modern MMORPG. Indeed, XLGAMES CEO Jake Song describes it as something of a hybrid:
“We are incredibly excited to unveil ‘ArcheAge Chronicles’ to the world, this new title represents our vision of combining the expansive, immersive elements of an MMO with the dynamic, engaging gameplay of an Online Action RPG. We can’t wait for players to experience the next chapter of the ArcheAge universe.”
Formerly known as ArcheAge 2, ArcheAge Chronicles is the direct sequel to the first opus. It builds logically on the legacy of the first, while introducing a fluid new open world filled with adventure, epic battles, and endless possibilities. Developed under Unreal Engine 5, the trailer reveals highly detailed graphics.
The story takes place in pioneer times, when the legendary, long-forgotten land of Auroria has just been rediscovered. Adventurers from all over the world flock to this ancient land, hoping to make a name for themselves. You, as a seasoned explorer, will be among the first to set foot on this mythical land as a member of a famous trading company. On this journey, you’ll explore ancient ruins, investigate the mysterious crash of an airship, and be drawn into the mystery surrounding this tragic event.
In terms of gameplay, the game features an open world to explore, a dynamic combat system, a player-driven economy, and a variety of social and community features.
ArcheAge Chronicles will be available in 2025 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
