With Gamescom 2024 underway, Black Myth Wukong is the main topic on everybody’s lips at the moment. For several reasons, the Chinese Action-RPG is at the center of attention with a release that has caused a considerable buzz. This is all the more true in China, its native country, where the launch was a truly national event. Of course, this led to a few issues.
Black Myth: Wukong Woke up PS5 Scalpers Too
Black Myth: Wukong has become a true legend, particularly in China, where Game Science’s game is exceeding expectations. According to Daniel Camilo, a consultant specializing in the Chinese video game market, the PS5 is selling extremely well in China, to the point of causing sell-outs. He points to the example of Huaqiangbei, one of the country’s largest electronics stores, which is struggling to keep up with demand.
According to him, this high demand is leading to scalping and reselling of the console, a practice we haven’t seen since the first two years following the launch of the PS5. It’s worth mentioning that Black Myth: Wukong has benefited from a very strong marketing campaign in China, and has even become a kind of national pride, demonstrating that China can also produce great single-player games.
Thanks to this success, many people in China wanted to buy a PS5 to play the game. According to Camilo, this includes both people with old PCs unable to run the game ( who therefore opt for the PS5) and others who aren’t hardcore gamers, but who want to give it a try.
Despite a Controversial Launch and Record Sales Figures
Black Myth: Wukong became the most-played single-player game in Steam history, with over 2.4 million players. It was also the most-viewed game on Chinese streaming platforms on its launch day, breaking all records for a single-player game (via Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners).
Despite difficulties before and during its launch (which could have been avoided) like a delayed Xbox version, a criticized physical version, the lack of communication around the PS5 version, and the guidelines sent to content creators, the game has finally won over gamers, who have given it extremely positive reviews.
Black Myth Wukong is available on PC and PS5. An Xbox Series version will be released later. Check out our full review for more details.
