Ghost of Yotei Marks the Start of a New Era for the PS5

by Gamingstry

Sucker Punch’s highly anticipated Ghost of Yotei will mark the beginning of a new era for Sony’s gaming division, for PS5 players and beyond.

That’s what Sony announced in its presentation of the group’s financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2024. The Japanese giant expects the second half of the year to be a little dull, before starting off stronger in fiscal 2025 with Ghost of Yotei, which is expected to be a PS5 exclusive during this period.

Apart from Astro Bot, which made a big splash in September, and Stellar Blade from Shift Up in April, PS5 owners are somewhat lacking in big exclusives from Sony. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released in October 2023, while early 2024 welcomed Helldivers 2, an outsider that broke records, selling even better than FF7 Rebirth. The next most highly anticipated PS5 exclusive, announced with great fanfare at the latest State of Play, is Ghost of Yotei. But Sucker Punch’s title won’t arrive until next year.

However, this may be part of Sony’s new strategy, aiming for more regular releases of major exclusives in the future. “We are making steady progress in the development of new titles and in improving our live service game processes, Starting with Ghost of Yotei, which is a sequel to the smash hit Ghost of Tsushima, we plan to continue releasing major single-player game titles every year from next fiscal year onwards”.

Despite Concord’s disaster, Sony clearly has no intention of abandoning its plans for games-as-a-service. But this statement tends to reassure PlayStation fans, a brand known mainly for its powerful single-player exclusives. So, with Ghost of Yotei, Sony’s gaming division is returning to what made it famous in the first place. As for the single-player exclusives that will follow Sucker Punch’s title, we’re also keeping a close eye on Marvel’s Wolverine. Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studio are also working on a single-player game of their own, which we await with great curiosity.
