Onimusha Way of the Sword

Unless you’re willing to ignore plausibility and let only your inner fan speak, saying “Onimusha is back” is a sentence you weren’t really prepared to write. And yet, in a market where action RPGs have largely filled our game libraries, Capcom feels that its license which has been neglected since 2006 has its share of the cake to claim. A comeback with a video announcement that will thrill anyone familiar with the PS2 era.

Souls floating in the air, suddenly sucked in by an Oni gauntlet – some symbols immediately set off a successful comeback announcement. And the entire trailer is a reminder: yes, we’re going to slay demons again.

First launched in 2001, the Onimusha license has made us used to fighting Genma, in a dark fantasy atmosphere and a historical context of feudal Japan. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is no different. A lone samurai battles hordes of demons who have invaded Kyoto in the early Edo era.

It’s too early to say anything about the gameplay, but the combat gives the impression of being a bit heavy-handed, in a good way, with a parry system on the menu. And there are obviously a few big chunks to overcome. Apart from that, there’s not much else to get your teeth into for a game that won’t be arriving until 2026 anyway. So be patient for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
