state of play 2024

After revealing the PS5 Pro, Sony had to focus on games. PlayStation fans were expecting a huge PlayStation Showcase, but had to make do with a rather unsurprising State of Play, which played it safe even if it did have an exciting announcement at the end. Here’s a summary of everything you need to know about the Showcase.

You’ll find all the highlights of the State of Play of Tuesday, September 24 here.

DLC date : Fall 2024
Platform : PS5

Sony’s hit of the new season was obviously present. Of course, we’re talking about Concord Astro Bot, opening the show with its DLC, which is currently in development. It will arrive later this Fall and will add 5 new speedrun levels, plus 10 more Bots to rescue. We can already see that Stellar Blade and Helldivers 2 will be among the new licenses added here.

Date : Spring 2025
Platform : PC – PS4 – PS5 – PS VR2

The curiosity in this State of Play comes from the creators of Lost in Random. The Midnight Walk maintains the spirit of the aforementioned game, but takes it to a whole new level thanks to its highly unique artistic direction. The game attempts to do something different by using models made from clay, modeling them in-game, and animating them stop-motion-style, delivering a striking result. This adventure game can be played on PS5 in standard mode or in virtual reality via PS VR2.

Date : 2025
Platform : PC – PS5 – Xbox Series

Hell is Us isn’t exactly a new announcement, but it’s probably something the public really discovered today. The game published by Nacon revealed a trailer full of mystery, with a highly intriguing universe most likely inspired by Death Stranding. This is the opposite of its gameplay influences, which seem to be closer to action-RPG, not to mention the dirty word Souls.

Date : November 7, 2024
Platform : PS VR2, Meta Quest

After three highly successful episodes, the Metro saga now moves to VR with a spin-off highly anticipated by fans of the saga and virtual reality enthusiasts in general. The new trailer released during this State of Play enables us to add a date to our calendar, November 7, when we’ll be able to explore Moscow’s underground with a helmet screwed onto our heads.

Date : 2025
Platform : PC – PS5 – Xbox Series

ArcheAge Chronicles (formerly known as ArcheAge 2) is the sequel to the first MMO from XLGAMES and Kakao Games. Building on the legacy of its predecessor, this new title will offer a fluid open world filled with adventure, epic battles, and endless opportunities. Designed with Unreal Engine 5, it will also include dynamic combat, a player-driven economy, a narrative single-player mode, and all the classic MMORPG ingredients.

Date : Available
Platform : PS5

While Nintendo is trying to destroy Pocketpair by suing the studio, the latter is releasing the PS5 version of Palworld. Granted, the timing makes you smile. It’s not really a surprise to see the game land on Sony’s console, given that it’s been teased so many times, but we weren’t really expecting it to be released today.

Date : Spring 2025
Platform : PC – PS5 – PS4 – Xbox One – Switch

Another remaster, you might say, but this one is quite surprising and should please even the most nostalgic. Lunar Remastered Collection will allow you to (re)discover the Lunar games: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, two JRPGs released in the ’90s and relatively unknown to the general public today. The catch-up session will feature enhanced visuals and will launch in spring 2025, with no further details.

Date : Available
Platform : PC – PS5 – PS4 – Xbox Series – Xbox One – Switch

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge also introduced one of its DLCs, as this was clearly the theme of the evening. With “Radical Reptiles”, the game gets two new reptile heroes (Mondo Gecko and Mona Lisa), which arrive at the same time as a free update adding Remix mode to the soundtrack.

DLC date : December 12, 2024

It’s more the kind of announcement you’d expect from Sonic Central. Well, Sonic x Shadows Generations popped up at the State of Play to present a little DLC worthy of the name, allowing us to play in a level inspired by the third Sonic movie, coming this December. Even better: here you’ll play as Keanu Reeves’ Shadow, starring the actor himself.

Platform : PC – PS5 – PS4 – Xbox Series – Xbox One – Switch

Hironobu Sakaguchi was there in person to tell us about the new version of Fantasian, his latest game which so far has only been available on iOS platforms. It’s finally coming to consoles in a version designed for joystick play, and now we even know the date: December 5.

Date : October 31, 2024
Platform : PC – PS5 – Xbox Series

This is one of the big releases of the end of the year, and BioWare needs to reassure its public after several disappointments. Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn’t have anything special to announce, but it was present with a large gameplay sequence showing the Mage class’ abilities against a large dragon. Now we’re just one month away from discovering whether this fourth episode lives up to expectations.

Date : October, 2024
Platform : PC – PS5 – Xbox Series

Alan Wake 2 continues to terrify us. Remedy’s game will soon receive a new expansion, which will be closely linked to Control, as we can see in this new trailer. Plenty of mysteries to discover in The Lake House this October.

Date : December 2024
Platform : PS VR2

IO Interactive continues to make the most of Hitman World of Assassination. This time, it’s taking advantage of PS VR2 to re-launch a new version, which includes the game’s iconic maps and is scheduled for release in December.

Platform : PC – PS5 – PS4 – Xbox Series – Xbox One – Switch

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is one of the most highly anticipated remasters we’ve ever seen. However, the surprise was diminished by the PSN leak a few hours earlier, yet fans will be delighted to enjoy these two games on December 10. No physical version in sight for the moment (nothing has been announced on this subject), but a release on all platforms.

Date : October 22, 2024
Platform : PC – PS5 – PS4 – Xbox Series – Xbox One – Switch

Blumhouse is more focused on cinema, but has recently opened a video game division to handle horror titles like Fear the Spotlight. A game that pays homage to the horror games of the first PlayStation, which means it had a rightful place on the show. We’ll soon find out if it lives up to expectations, as the game is coming out this October 22.

Date : November 2024
Platform : PC – PS5

Presented in a previous State of Play, the construction and exploration game Towers of Aghasba has returned to confirm its release date. This open-world game will go through the early access stage, with an arrival now scheduled for November 2024 on Steam and PS5, with three ecosystems to restore, some forty creatures to unlock and content to be added as early access progresses.

Date : January 17, 2025
Platform: PC – PS5 – Xbox Series

This State of Play was a bit of a repeat of the spring showcase, with many of the games we’d already seen returning. At least, they came to announce dates, like Dynasty Warriors Origins. This highly ambitious Musou (as seen in this latest trailer) will have us destroying entire armies in January 17.

Date : February 28, 2025
Platform : PC – PS5 – Xbox Series

With Tokyo Game Show just around the corner, and Capcom hosting its own event for the new edition of the Japanese trade show, Monster Hunter Wilds was part of the action. It presented a spectacular trailer, showing us regions other than the desert we’re used to, while emphasizing its much more advanced staging than in previous episodes. The main thing to remember was the release date, now set for February 28, 2025.

Date : November 14th
Platform : PC – PS5 – Switch

A double dose of Aloy for this State of Play, starting with LEGO Horizon Adventures, which used this showcase to announce its release date. You’ll be able to rediscover the license’s post-apocalyptic world in a more cheerful, cubic form this November 14, on PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Date : October 31, 2024
Platform: PC – PS5

Once again, the cat was out of the bag before the official announcement, but Sony has confirmed the existence of the remaster for Horizon Zero Dawn. Nobody really needed it, but it’s here. It will use all the expertise gained on Horizon Forbidden West to improve on Aloy’s early adventures, and probably even more so on PS5 Pro. We’ve learned that this remaster will be released on October 31 on PC and PS5, and if you own the PS4 version of the game, a $9.99 upgrade will be available to save you from paying for the whole game again.

DLC date : Unknown
Platform : PS5

This was clearly the State of Play of DLCs, so we might as well add another one to the list: Stellar Blade is about to receive its long-awaited Photo mode, and not only that. We were also shown the world’s most obvious collaboration, with NieR Automata. Eve will be receiving a 2B costume in the near future, and we don’t know if it will be free like the others, or if you’ll have to pay for it this time.

While we were at it, Sony took advantage of its State of Play to reveal the upcoming October PlayStation Plus games. The selection includes WWE 2K24, Dead Space Remake and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!

Sony used the occasion to promote its latest accessories, with the Chroma Collection. A range of three new colors for the DualSense, as well as for the PS5 covers. The Chroma controllers will be available at $79.99, while the faceplates will cost $64.99. For the pink/cream and blue/purple colors, release is scheduled for November 7, and the green hue for January 23.

Naturally, Sony also mentioned its PS5 Pro. It had to be mentioned, even if this State of Play didn’t make us feel much like buying one. Mark Cerny presented us with a small mash-up of the games that will benefit from an update on this console, to make them look more attractive, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and many others.

Date : 2025
Platform : PS5

The showcase ended with a new release that many had been waiting for: Ghost of Tsushima 2. Well, sorry, Ghost of Yotei. A logical name change, since we’ll no longer be following the adventures of Jin Sakai, but of a new heroine called Atsu, whose journey takes place at the beginning of the 17th century. A rather radical change, which also takes us to another region of Japan, the one we know today as Hokkaido. A gorgeous region, judging by the first landscapes we’ve seen, while we wait for a little more gameplay. It shouldn’t be too long, as this new episode is already scheduled for 2025.

State of Play leaves us with a strange feeling. Even if we were pleased to see some of the games already announced, this showcase was certainly lacking surprises and new blood, opting for DLCs and remasters instead. The one-more-thing made up for the evening, but we can’t say that we witnessed a really memorable show.
